In-Group Bias

Why your 'tribe' makes you blind, tribal, and dangerously stupid.

The hardwired reflex to trust, favor, and forgive people in your circle—while aggressively demonizing, dismissing, or penalizing everyone else.

THE TRAP TEST

You are interviewing two candidates. One went to your alma mater and shares your exact hobbies.

The Oxytocin Echo Chamber

Oxytocin is famously known as the 'love hormone'. But neurologically, it is the 'tribe hormone'. It floods your brain with trust for people who look, think, and act like you, while simultaneously increasing hostility toward the 'out-group'. In prehistoric times, identifying your tribe instantly kept you from being killed by strangers. Today, it creates polarized echo chambers. Your brain actively releases dopamine when you agree with your tribe and triggers physical pain responses when you dissent, keeping you mentally enslaved to the group consensus.

The Theranos Board of Directors

How did a 19-year-old dropout fool the world into a $9 billion healthcare fraud? In-group bias. Elizabeth Holmes didn't stack her board with medical experts; she stacked it with elite political and military insiders: Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, Gen. Jim Mattis. Because these men viewed each other as the ultimate 'in-group' of unimpeachable statesmen, none of them bothered to verify the medical science. They implicitly trusted the girl their prestigious friends trusted. The tribal blindness of the elite cost investors billions.

The Anti-Tribal Protocol

1

Kill the 'Culture Fit'

In business, explicitly ban hiring or judging based on 'likability' or 'culture fit'. Evaluate based on 'culture add' and objective rubrics.

2

The Identity Flip

When evaluating an action, mentally flip the identity of the actor to your worst enemy. If your opinion of the action changes, you are infected by tribal bias.

3

Curate Dissent

Intentionally follow, read, and engage with the smartest, most reasonable voices in the 'out-group'. Destroy the caricature your brain builds of the opposition.
